The Callous Daoboys

Answers by guitarist, Daniel Hodsdon

When did you decide that a career in music was for you?

-When I played my middle school talent show and ripped off a Les Claypool lick for 10 minutes straight

Who are your musical inspirations and why?

-My dad, Ken Hodsdon, and Dean Murphy for both showing me how cool music can be

Can you tell me 3 things about yourself that people might not already know?

  1. I can bench 290lbs

  2. I can squat 400lbs

  3. I can deadlift 450lbs

  4. I can speak fluent Mandarin Chinese

  5. I’m really bad at counting

What song of yours best describes you and why?

-I’m only on three songs with this band so far so probably the pulses. verse in Designer Shroud of Turin cuz those are my boys and we’re a baker’s dozen of some bad mf’s

What has been the best gig you have done to date and why?

-Easily our set at ArcTanGent in 2023. To have THAT kind of response for a stupid lil band from Georgia felt otherworldly. I still sometimes feel like that show didn’t actually happen and it was just a dream I had in August

If you could perform a gig at any venue where would it be and why?

-The Tabernacle in Atlanta. All of us have seen legendary shows there. If you know, you know

What has been your best achievement to date and what would you like to achieve in the future?

-Definitely that 400lb squat. I really didn’t think I had it in me, but once I got my back dug into that bar and unracked it, I KNEW it was happening. Just had to go down and back up.

Tell me a story from backstage or after a gig?

-I met one of my favorite guitarists while he was really drunk and he insulted my band

What do you like best about being a musician and why?

-Sliding down from the 12th fret

If you were not in the job you are now what would you be doing?

-Legally I am not allowed to discuss this

What has been the best gig you have been to as a fan and can you tell us about it?

-Victor Wooten. The reason it was so good is because it was Victor Wooten.

What would your ideal festival line up be and why?

-Gojira 5 times in a row

What would you say is the best piece of advice you have ever been given?

-”What am I gonna do? Be upset?”

What things make you happy and what things annoy you?

-My cat does both of these things on a daily basis

What things do you like to do when you are away from music?

-I love playing video games so much, dude. I wish I got questions about the video games I’ve been playing more than questions about the music I play. Go to any of our shows and you’ll get most of your questions answered by the halfway point of the set.

Do you think social media and the internet are a good thing in the music industry?

How important do you think your look and image is when it comes to being in the music industry?

-Probably a 6-7 out of 10 on the important scale

Can you tell us about any tattoos you have and the significance of them to you?

-No deep meaning behind any of them, I just thought they would look cool at the time and I was right. Still am.

-Free food. Free housing. Free healthcare.

What would your ideal day consist of?

-Wake up at 10AM, eat breakfast outside, watch Family Guy, play some guitar, hang out with my friends and play Mario Kart with them.

If you could say one thing to your fans what would it be and why?

-It’s coming.

How would you answer the question Who are The Callous Daoboys and what are the differences between you as a music artist and you away from music?

-The Callous Daoboys are Carson Pace, Madeline Caffrey, Amber Christman, Jackie Buckalew, Matthew Hague, and Daniel Hodsdon. I only have so many hands

What was the first record or song you purchased and why?

-Weird “Al” Yankovic’s greatest hits when I was in… 6th grade. Our science teacher would let us play music over the classroom speakers and I thought Weird Al was a genius.

-Find that video where an interviewer asks Serj Tankian this same question. His answer is my answer.

If you wrote a book about yourself what would it have in it?

-John 1:14

What has the rest of the year got in store for you?

-Probably gonna play some more rock shows and write some more rock songs. After that, we might play those rock songs at more rock shows. Haven’t really decided just yet.
