Charlotte Devaney Interview

When did you decide that a career in music was for you?

I have always loved music from a young age , my first career in music was as a professional dancer, from doing that i was around so many Dj’s all the time and it was really a natural progression into something I’ve always had a passion for.

Who are your musical inspirations and why?

I have so many! My musical influences and inspirations are vast from Fabio & Grooverider, LTJ Bukem & The Prodigy… I got into dance music very young and used to sneak out of the house to go to raves! I’ve also always loved urban and pop music. Artists such as Missy Elliot, Snoop Dogg, Nicki Minaj, Lauryn Hill, Jamiroquai, and Bob Marley have also heavily influenced my style and vibe… I try to fuse all my favorite music styles in a lot of what I do!

Can you tell me 3 things about yourself that people might not already know?

I'm a Vegan and Animal Activist, Im an Actress as well as a musician and I like Borat (quite a lot)

What song of yours best describes you and why?

My new single Spell It , as i wrote it about myself and my journey to self-love!

What has been the best gig you have done to date and why?

Smashing up Notting Hill Carnival 2018 on top of the FBU’s fire engine!

What has been your best achievement to date and what would you like to achieve in the future?

I have so many so far! Definitely working with Snoop Dogg and shooting the video for the single I did with him, ‘Flip It’ in LA via Capitol Records, I also co-starred in a Hollywood comedy ‘How to Lose Friends and Alienate People’ with Simon Pegg and Megan Foxx a few years ago which was a massive career highlight. In the future id def like to do more acting and mainstream radio presenting, and of course, keep working hard and being successful with my music.

What do you like best about being a musician ?

I love being free to be myself and i love being in a job where you never know what’s round the corner, new and exciting things happen all the time!

What has been the best gig you have been too as a fan and can you tell us about it?

I love Beyonce, and have been to see her 4 times in London, in my option she’s the best live entertainer of our generation!

What would your ideal festival line up be and why?

Id prob say something crazy like, Beyonce, Nicki Minaj, Megan Thee Stallion, Chase & Status, Major Lazer and The Prodigy RIP Keith

What would you say is the best piece of advice you have ever been given?

Always be yourself and never be afraid to put yourself out there with no f**ks given!

What things do you like to do when you are away from music?

I love new and exciting vegan food , Animals and traveling to tropical hot places in no particular order!

Do you think social media and the internet are a good thing in the music industry?

I think in some ways it's great and other ways it’s not. It's great as its made it easier for artists to get themselves out there and connect with fans, but the music streaming age has made music a lot more throw away and made it harder for musicians who are talented to get noticed as it's so saturated now, and the focus on numbers has taken away the real artistry in a lot of ways.

How important do you think your look and image is when it comes to being in the music industry?

I think its a lot less focused on that today, which is a good thing, so i don't think it's important to be conventionally ‘beautiful’ anymore, you just gotta be great at what you do and be bringing something different to the table.

If you run the country for a day what would you change about it and why?

End Homelessness because in the uk we have a huge homelessness problem, which for a rich country should never be the case!, end animal testing because its a cruel,  unnecessary, and out of date practice  & end factory farming because it’s super cruel and spreads disease.

What has been your experience during the Covid 19 situations? Can you tell us how this has affected you and do you have a message for people out there?

Covid-19 is an absolute madness, to be honest, it’s totally spun me out! I’ve lost a lot of work, and being self-employed it’s obviously a very worrying time… However, the main thing is to make sure we all stay healthy and look after each other and this thing will pass!

I think the one thing I’ve personally noticed from this situation, is the love people are showing for one another, something you don’t always see in this selfish world we live in. Also it’s stripped-back life to the bare bones and put everyone on a level playing field no matter how much money you have or who you are.

If you could say one thing to your fans what would it be and why?

Thankyou for being so loyal and supporting me in everything i do, love you guys! Especially all my CD’s….

What are the differences between you as a music artist and you away from music ?

As a music artist im bright colorful and crazy, in real life I'm all of those things, but am also caring, compassionate, loyal and love my bed

What was the first record you put out?

here it is, no other words necessary lol

What would say to someone thinking about becoming a musician and getting into the music industry?

I would say go for it, its one of the most fun jobs in the world , but be prepared, nothing happens instantly, you have to work hard and enjoy the ride !

If you could collaborate with any other band/singer or musician who would you choose and why?

Id love to work with Nicki Minaj she’s still the no.1 female rapper for me, think we could make a banger togerher!

What has the rest of the year got in store for you?

I have lots of music planned, as well as my new live stream show Bass Face live , once clubs open again i hope to get back out on the road to smash up clubs worldwide again!
