Jallal Returns!

What do you think makes you stand out from other artists and what makes your music stand out?

My way of life, and that’s coming from the most humblest honest place. My life is not like the stereotypical artist who is caught up in the lifestyle of drugs, women, and excessive materialism. It is more focused on the essence of life and why are we here as the human race, and what is my purpose as a human first. It stands out because at the end of the day its me. I think its very hard to clone someone’s exact personality, and my music has my personality written all over it. I love that it does stand out. I am truly grateful for that.

When did you decide that music was going to be the career you continued with for the rest of your life and what made you come to that decision?

I decided to do so at 18, I was presented with the right oppurtunities and the right people. Hence, artists who were in my life very young like Loon, Lupe Fiasco, and Mos Def. It just made sense, people can spend their whole life trying to just get to meet the artists I listed above. So it felt right to me at the time, and I put my best foot forward and put my trust in God. The rest fell into place due to taqwa and tawakul.

Other than musicians who would you say is your biggest inspiration?

God, The Prophet Muhammad (S), Life, and my family. The world is filled with so much beauty, when one looks beyond that and finds the true meaning of why that beauty is there in the first place, in my opinion it becomes the essence of inspiration.

Do you believe in luck?Do you have anything that brings you luck or rituals you do before a gig etc?

I believe in destiny, but I also believe that we are writing it everyday. There is always divine intervention happening all around us. So before I go on stage I say a prayer with all my team members. Its such a wholesome, comfortable environment. Whatever race or religion one is. We just get together, because at the end of the day we are all human we are the same in that retrospect, and we all go back to One, when this is all over.

Did you enjoy music at school and were you any good?

Its funny I really enjoyed sports more, and I loved jazz. Jazz was the soundtrack to my life in school mixed with a little Knaan, Outlandish, and Lupe Fiasco.

Pick a song of yours and tell us the story of how it was written and what the song is about?.

I’m Human. The song was written at a point in my life where I was actually very eager in winning, and celebrating life a little more. I do that everyday, but the song was at a point in my life where I wanted to gravitate and have certain things gravitate my way. It was my ode to me and the universe at large. A bar that sticks out to me is “When I do me I know its best for me, a bunch of fake niggas out here testing me. Can’t let that ever get out of hand and get the best of me. I don’t know you did you invest in me” It was so focused on self love and not being selfish. Just understanding my worth. The song is about doing you but at the same time respecting others around you by just being the best you could possibly be. It’s a life long journey and a song I am truly proud of.

What was the 1st performance you did in front of people and what was your first gig you did and can tell you tell us about it?

It was actually with Lupe Fiasco I went on right before him, and before he went on he talked about what he liked of my performance.

What does music mean to you?

Expression.

Take us through a day when you are writing or recording?

Its amazing and just an overall blast, specifically recording. I am in the studio with Killa- J and Jan Fairchild and we just go back-to-back hitting raps. It feels like highschool all over again but better because its being recorded! Ha!

What would you like to achieve in the next year?

So much, Id like to release more works, and be surrounded with people who I love and care for. I am working on me more so. That’s my focus.

What one thing could you not live without and why?

My family and friends. They are everything to me. That’s not one thing but equal love.

What is your favourite way to listen to music and do you ever listen to your own music?

My favorite way of listening to music is through my iPhone. I love listening to my own music because I get in a zone of editing.

Who would you have to play you in a film about your life and career and what would the plot of the film be?

It would have to be a young Denzel Washington. It would be about the struggle to get to where I got to.

If you had to change your image, genre of music and just reinvent yourself, what would you do?

I would make rock music. Id still dress ultra fly. Just fitting to the sounds of course.

What has been one thing you have done during your music career that you regret or wish you could go back and change? What would it be and why?

Nothing, I am happy for everything that has happened, because it was supposed to happen. Well I take that back we had an opportunity to do a song with Lil Baby when he first came out, and I really like his music. He is super dope.

How has Covid 19 affected you ?

A lot, it has really put a pause to my creativity.

Can you give us a rundown of all the music related things you have been upto in the past couple of months and what we can expect for the future?

I am working on a joint project with the EMD artist Slushii. It’s going to be huge and major. Slushii and I have been friends for quite sometime now. So it’s only right that we put out some music we made during our travels and just comic con hangouts.
