JXlyD Interview

When did you decide that a career in music was for you?

I have always written my own music since I can remember . I remember being young and even then I knew that was all I wanted to do, since then I have not stopped.

Who are your musical inspirations and why?

My musical inspirations really come from feelings and everyday situations but I have always listened to Eminem, the weeknd, Jake Miller, Machine Gun Kelly, Sam Smith, The Eagles, Drake, The Beatles, Trey Songz, there's so many I could list, hundreds of artists from different genres. I listen to everything.

Can you tell me 3 things about yourself that people might not already know?

I love to game, I have started writing a book and I am gutted that Shadow Hunters was cancelled.

What song of yours best describes you and why?

It sounds cliche but there is a part of me in everyone.

What has been the best gig you have done to date and why?

My own headline shows I did over the last few years in London.

If you could perform a gig at any venue where would it be and why?

KOKO or Electric Ballroom and of course The 02.

What has been your best achievement to date and what would you like to achieve in the future?

The album I am working on at the moment is all very hush hush for now but I am already super proud of it and in the future hopefully it helps people feel good and get them through tough times.

Tell me a story from backstage or after a gig?

I can’t disclose that information lol.

What do you like best about being a musician and why?

The feeling I get when I take something from its roots and build something much bigger with it. The way it serves as therapy and has always been there through life and always will be.

If you were not in the job you are now what would you be doing?

I’ve always wanted to have a go at writing stories.

What has been the best gig you have been too as a fan and can you tell us about it?

Machine Gun Kelly, Hotel Diablo Tour was amazing, probably the best performer I have ever seen.

What would your ideal festival line up be and why?

Too many artists that I could list for this, but would include me and others in my circle including J-Script and WxvyArtist.

What would you say is the best piece of advice you have ever been given?

Recently, I was told by one of my boys “Breathe, be down if you need to be down, but then get up and carry on”.

What things make you happy and what things annoy you?

Music, gaming, reading and anything that gets me out of my headspace makes me happy. I also love Ben and Jerry’s. Some of the things that annoy me are; Disloyalty, fake-love and negative energies.

What things do you like to do when you are away from music?

Besides the things I have already listed, I like to draw, watch football and I am a massive wrestling fan as well. I don’t like to be away from music for very long to be fair.

Do you think social media and the internet are a good thing in the music industry?

Social media has it’s good and bad points like most things, it would take forever to weigh up the pros and cons.

How important do you think you look and image is when it comes to being in the music industry?

In the past it seemed like it was crucial but in this day and age things seem to be different, which is great, it’s more about the music itself which is a great leap forward.

Can you tell us about any tattoos you have and the significance of them to you?

I have quite a few but my favourite is the owl on my neck.

If you run the country for a day what would you change about it and why?

I would implement some kind of law which kept people from being homeless.

What would your ideal day consist of?

The perfect day for me would start with a fry up and a coffee, the studio with a producer, engineer and a guitarist, make a couple bangers , then chill in bed with a film and my missus.

What has been your experience during the Covid 19 situations. Can you tell us how this has affected you personally, how it has affected you professionally and maybe a story from this time or a message for people out there?

I think everyone has been affected in one way or another, but the main thing is we stay safe, it’s been tough staying inside especially on the mental health aspect, but we are inside for a reason and it’s for the greater good. Try to stay productive but if you can’t that’s fine too, just get through however you can, I have got through it by reading, writing, and creating as much as possible.

If you could say one thing to your fans what would it be and why?

The album is coming, so wait on it. Thank you for your support, I love you.

How would you answer the question Who is JXLYD and what are the differences between you as a music artist and you away from music ?

JXLYD is multidimensional, I make whatever I feel like making there is nothing I stay away from or prefer doing, I am just an all round artist, I don’t really separate the two.

What was the first record or song you purchased and why?

I have bought so many over the years, the last record I bought was Sam Tompkins, You Broke My Heart So Gently.

What would say to someone thinking about becoming a musician and getting into the music industry?

Be aware you need a thick skin, competitive confidence and believe in yourself. Also the joy it will bring you is endless.

If you could collaborate with any other band/singer or musician who would you choose and why?

Sam Tompkins, MGK, Professor Green and Eminem.

If you could have written one song from history which would it have been and why? What things make you uncomfortable?

Rehab by MGK because it is so relatable to my past situations. What makes me uncomfortable… weird textures (like Avocados).

If you wrote a book about yourself what would it have in it?

That book will come...

What has the rest of the year got in store for you?

Finishing the projects I am currently working on, finally getting a fresh fade and then making more projects lol and hopefully performing at some shows in there somewhere too.
