Kulick Interview
When did you decide that a career in music was for you?
I never knew it was a career until one day I realised it was all I was doing!
Who are your musical inspirations and why?
Tom Petty for his quick pop songs and storyteller lyrics, A Day To Remember for their crisp sound and amazing lyrics, and a million other amazing artists
Can you tell me 3 things about yourself that people might not already know?
I was born half deaf, I know how to build a house from start to finish, and moving furniture is an amazing stress reliever for me
What song of yours best describes you and why?
Hydroplane because it is literally the story of how I grew up and how emotional I’ve always been.
What has been the best gig you have done to date and why?
The best gig was the whole Andy Black tour in 2019 because it was a nationwide tour plus Canada and it was an absolute dream.
If you could perform a gig at any venue where would it be and why?
Red Rocks Amphitheatre. I have always wanted to perform there because I love nature and outdoor shows.
What has been your best achievement to date and what would you like to achieve in the future?
Being able to work on music every day, and I would like to continue to do so throughout my entire life. It is a challenge to maintain that kind of freedom and I don’t take any of it for granted.
Tell me a story from backstage or after a gig?
I was so sick for a show on the Andy Black tour that immediately after the show, I ran off stage and outside and threw up everywhere on the sidewalk. Seconds later I rounded the corner and a fan came up to me and was complimenting me on our set and I had to pretend like nothing happened. I kept it short and ran back to the greenroom to rest and stay away from everyone.
What do you like best about being a musician and why?
Being able to sing with an acoustic guitar or a piano is still one of the best feelings in the world. It’s like the feeling people get when they scream or yell to let emption out, but you can do it in a beautiful melodic way, and with word that are true to you. Nothing can beat it.
If you were not in the job you are now what would you be doing?
I would be working construction, doing roofs or working in a recording studio as an audio engineer.
What has been the best gig you have been too as a fan and can you tell us about it?
I am such an introvert, I honestly rarely go to shows (sad as a musician I know but it’s the truth). My favorite show has to be seeing Tom Petty in New York a few months before he passed away. Just watching the audience react to his songs was incredible.
What would your ideal festival line up be and why?
If I was in the festival, I would be happy with that and wouldn’t be complaining ;)
What would you say is the best piece of advice you have ever been given?
If you don’t succeed the first time, try, try. again.
What things make you happy and what things annoy you?
Peaceful moments. Moments that disrupt peace.
What things do you like to do when you are away from music?
I love to run, journal, meditate, stretch, rollerblade, anything in the sun, paint, and play a little video games as a treat with my brothers.
Do you think social media and the internet are a good thing in the music industry?
I don’t think social media is good for anything to be honest, and the internet can be good when used correctly, with discipline and focus.
How important do you think you look and image is when it comes to being in the music industry?
In todays world, it can mean a lot. However, I HAVE to believe that good music STILL breaks through no matter what. I do think it’s important to know who you are and what you have to share which will help your image and look.
Can you tell us about any tattoos you have and the significance of them to you?
I have so many, but my first tattoo is the music staff on my left arm. I got it when I was 15 and it’s a song I wrote for my grandfather when he passed away, which is what started my obsession and anxiety about death and my tattoo sleeves!
If you run the country for a day what would you change about it and why?
I don’t think I could get anything done in a single day. If anything, I would have a live broadcast and try to explain why we all need to come together and stop choosing sides, and kind of try to have a level headed statement (CRAZY IDEA, RIGHT?)
What would your ideal day consist of?
Waking up, working out, running, meditating, spending some time in the warm sun preferably by a beach, writing some music, and having some amazing food throughout the day.
What has been your experience during the Covid 19 situations. Can you tell us how this has affected you personally, how it has affected you professionally and maybe a story from this time or a message for people out there?
I have spent a lot of time indoors which has affected me, and obviously not being able to tour has as well. As for any trying time, I think it’s important for people to take care of themselves physically and mentally. Usually when you don’t want to get up or take care of yourself, that’s when you really need to push through and do it.
If you could say one thing to your fans what would it be and why?
Thank you for always listening to my music and supporting me, and take care of yourselves out there. Everyone should know how appreciated they are.
How would you answer the question Who is Kulick and what are the differences between you as a music artist and you away from music ?
Kulick is an over exaggeration of who Jacob is. The main difference is that I am much more shy than I seem when people meet me, and I really enjoy solitude and calm.
What was the first record or song you purchased and why?
I think it was Ricky Martin’s first album and I have no idea why but damn I still love that album.
What would you say to someone thinking about becoming a musician and getting into the music industry?
It can be a whole lot of fun and there isn’t one correct way to do it. Ask questions and follow your gut.
If you could collaborate with any other band/singer or musician who would you choose and why?
Maroon 5 because they have AMAZING hooks and Adam Levine is an incredible vocalist.
If you could have written one song from history which would it have been and why?
*googles most synced song ever - so I would be set financially for life!
What things make you uncomfortable?
Creepy people online with no boundaries with what they post or what they message to me
If you wrote a book about yourself what would it have in it?
My whole life story with a photo album in the middle and the cover would be an engraved hummingbird, brown cover.
What has the rest of the year got in store for you?
I just released my new album Everyone I Know Will Die, so there’s content to be made, looking for tours, and I am producing a TON of new artists, so email or DM me if you want to work together!
