LEON AKBAR Interview
When did you decide that a career in music was for you?
Music has always been a part of my life, writing lyrics was helpful as a teen and that developed into creating music.
Who are your musical inspirations and why?
My rap inspirations, akala, ocean wisdom, little simz.
Musically I'm inspired by everything, I enjoy most genres.
Can you tell me 3 things about yourself that people might not already know?
I delete more songs than I put out.
What song of yours best describes you and why?
Wanted man, it's probably my most well known but I'd say any song off #SOCIALLYDISTANT this is where my heads at!
What has been the best gig you have done to date and why?
Id have to say, 'sick of being normal' organised by the originators of punk. I had members of the not sensibles (gaz and sage) backing me on stage, it's mad how similar punk and rap are!
If you could perform a gig at any venue where would it be and why?
At the present moment, I think like most people I'd be happy to play at and venue anywhere start or finish . I think all creatives are ready to go, but with the upcoming release of #SOCIALLYDISTANT2 I'm raring to go!
What has been your best achievement to date and what would you like to achieve in the future?
Each accolade always has a short sense of satisfaction, I don't think satisfaction comes easy for me I'm always pushing harder and trying new things. I'd like to be able to say I'm a full time musician, to the point of being able to help others create and learn!
Tell me a story from backstage or after a gig?
How r-rated is this interview?
I mean I've done some wild stuff in my life, most recently jumped on naked attraction.. I think some of the stuff I do sensiblely some would consider outrageous, I'm a bugger for grabbing a pint from the crowd and throwing it down my neck!
What do you like best about being a musician and why?
In all honesty, half of the process is beyond stressful but it's always gratifying to be able to create from start to finish, distribute and perform your own music!
If you were not in the job you are now what would you be doing?
Currently, I'm still a creative. But not a full time musician, if I wasn't creating in one sense it would be in another category of the game.
What has been the best gig you have been too as a fan and can you tell us about it?
I can't say I've seen anyone get about a stage the same as Damien Marley, that guy hit every word unless he intended not too! Pure talent and a real inspiration.
What would your ideal festival line up be and why?
420, anywhere, anyplace.
It's the festival scene I frequentl the most, and you never really get big names.. Its cool hearing the sound of up and coming artists, underground music is where its at imo.
What would you say is the best piece of advice you have ever been given?
'Expect the worst, hope for the best'
'Don't argue with idiots, from a distance noone can tell a difference'
'If don't surround yourself with winners, you'll be the biggest looser on the team'
What things make you happy and what things annoy you?
Haha I'm a complex creature, I have a tendency to take things as they come.. I think of I'm set on the vibe noone can budge me!
What things do you like to do when you are away from music?
Art, video, photography, I'm a huge comic fan, pokemon also! I'm into collecting I've never really stopped, I got into photography and film came hand in hand and definitely helps to be able to create your own video content!
Do you think social media and the internet are a good thing in the music industry?
This was pretty much the topic for my dissertation to complete university, two years in media and journalism then a final in music production (2:1 BA hons).
If I could give a one sentence answer, depends if your good at using the Internet?
It's not as cut and dry as, make music, share it and people listen.. These days you have to have usp's and I hear a lot of people talk about the mix, all about the mix.. I thought it was all about the lyrics?
How important do you think you look and image is when it comes to being in the music industry?
If you can turn up then it doesn't matter how you dress and if you aynt got shit too offer looking like someone who does doesn't mean you do.
Can you tell us about any tattoos you have and the significance of them to you?
I've got half a sleeve, with symbols and dates of significance.. I've got stars on my knees, that mean I won't kneal to anyone.. Medusa on my leg cos she a stoned cold bishh.. Egyptian neck and chest peice.. Bit of a deeper meaning for all of them
If you run the country for a day what would you change about it and why?
I'd have to take over 420 or Halloween, some time when I could throw a giant gig.. Well I suppose if I can run the whole country I could do that any day
What would your ideal day consist of?
No stress, a lot of silence. I enjoy silence as much as I enjoy a wall of speakers and a subquake
What has been your experience during the Covid 19 situations. Can you tell us how this has affected you personally, how it has affected you professionally and maybe a story from this time or a message for people out there?
I've had a bit of a rough time personally not fully related to covid, it has created a bit of perspective for me being at home more than usual. I've managed to crate to collab albums with KING V and MONSTAH MUZIK #SOCIALLYDISTANT 1+2..
I fully think lockdown has brought out the best and worst in people
If you could say one thing to your fans what would it be and why?
Together every achievies more.. I say it a lot and it's super cheesy but it's true I wouldn't be myself without the help and support of others.
How would you answer the question Who is Leon Akbar and what are the differences between you as a music artist and you away from music ?
I would say to people who listen too my music that you probably understand me more than most, if you know me as a person you understand music more than most. Theres a sine line between MeLeon and Me, Leon but I wouldn't be myself without all three persons lol!
What was the first record or song you purchased and why?
I got my dad too buy me the chronic 2001 CD back in the day, that shot was biblical too me.. Necro gory days, wutang 36 Chambers shit I used to bump tf out of Eminem before he got cloned
What would say to someone thinking about becoming a musician and getting into the music industry?
Proper preparation prevents a piss poor performance, always work on yourself first.. Not just in music but life in general, be ready for anything, like fully ready!
If you could collaborate with any other band/singer or musician who would you choose and why?
I couldn't ask for a better person to be collabing with, there was a few reasons me and KING V started working together and plenty of people tried to prevent it. We've both lived very separate and different lives but are so similar in moral and music, he's an absolute G, like a family member!
If you could have written one song from history which would it have been and why?
I don't know if I listen to any music and wish if done it, if anything I frequently listen to music of all genres and eras for inspiration.. I think I would have suited being in the Sugar Hill Gang
What things make you uncomfortable?
Loads of things make me feel uncomfortable but I'm happy to push through, eash visit to a stage is always a big thing for me.. Anxiety and adrenaline are close company.
If you wrote a book about yourself what would it have in it?
Lots of pictures haha
What has the rest of the year got in store for you?
The release of #SOCIALLYDISTANT2 on 19.06.21
Plenty of holidays and hopefully a bag load of local gigs!
