S Jane Interview
When did you decide that a career in music was for you?
When I started to play solo in 2019.
Who are your musical inspirations and why?
At an early age I bought all The Beatles albums, and used to watch them on television and their films. They are so inspiring with their creative music and lyrics. Other influences Hawkwind, early Pink Floyd, Toyah, The Stranglers, The Primitives, The Moody Blues and many more!
Can you tell me 3 things about yourself that people might not already know?
I’m following a spiritual path
I’m a vegetarian
I’ve got 2 dogs, Daisy(Golden Labrador) and Archie (Collie Cross)
What song of yours best describes you and why?
Ha that’s tricky, so far maybe Find The Time as its about the meditation I do every day and fitting everything else in around it!
What has been the best gig you have done to date and why?
Playing at the Crossing The Tyne festival 2019. The audience was really getting into the music and some were dancing, was a fab atmosphere.
If you could perform a gig at any venue where would it be and why?
I would love to play Glastonbury I can imagine the atmosphere would be incredible.
What has been your best achievement to date and what would you like to achieve in the future?
I made the front cover of Gonzo magazine! I would like to play more festivals around the UK and possibly outside of the UK too.
Tell me a story from backstage or after a gig?
I played a gig in Tynemouth with the band in 2018 (the band is now known as Emerald Stone and we are still together). Before we went on stage, there was a couple of great solo artists. Then a couple of months later I got told one of the solo artists was Sam Fender!
What do you like best about being a musician and why?
When people tell me they like the music! When I create a song I play all the instruments myself (except in Emerald Stone), I play the guitar and have a keyboard synthesiser for the drums/bass and other sounds. Its amazing that people are enjoying the music.
If you were not in the job you are now what would you be doing?
Well I do administration work. And would love to be a musician full time!
What has been the best gig you have been too as a fan and can you tell us about it?
I’ve always loved the Moody Blues so when I heard Justin Hayward was coming to Newcastle I jumped at the chance to see him! I think it was 2018 when I saw him. And he sang Forever Autumn.
What would your ideal festival line up be and why?
I’ve always wanted to play a hippy type festival! So any bands/artists who fit into that genre would be fab to play with.
What would you say is the best piece of advice you have ever been given?
Be positive ☺
What things make you happy and what things annoy you?
Being with positive, nice easy going people makes me feel happy.
People not putting their rubbish away is not good!
What things do you like to do when you are away from music?
I like to spend time with family and friends. Meditation. And keep fit walking the dogs. Enjoy watching films, tv. Listening to music.
Do you think social media and the internet are a good thing in the music industry?
I can only say from my experience which has been positive so far. That’s it’s a great way to get the music out there and I can talk directly to the audience.
How important do you think you look and image is when it comes to being in the music industry?
I’m not really into how people look but I know a lot of people are!
Can you tell us about any tattoos you have and the significance of them to you?
I have got one teeny weeny tattoo with my partners name on. Its on my back. Never thought I’d do that!
If you run the country for a day what would you change about it and why?
As I love my free time off work, I’d give everyone a holiday for that day.
What would your ideal day consist of?
Playing a festival and watching the other bands/artists play too on a nice warm day. Chatting to people there and everyone having an amazing fun day.
What has been your experience during the Covid 19 situations. Can you tell us how this has affected you personally, how it has affected you professionally and maybe a story from this time or a message for people out there?
The virus seemed to spread really fast from when I first saw news of it in China. The next thing was when I was at work in the office, and we were all sent home.
Personally I have been more careful like disinfecting door handles in the house more frequently. Professionally I have been provided with a laptop from work and now work at home for the foreseeable future. I would say try and keep as healthy, safe and positive as you can. I’ve been going on extra long walks to keep fit.
If you could say one thing to your fans what would it be and why?
Thank you so much for your support as it is so uplifting that your there. And your most welcome to get in touch on Facebook or other social media.
How would you answer the question Who is Melanie Sibthorpe (Melanie S Jane) and what are the differences between you as a music artist and you away from music?
I do try my best in life and am learning all the time and also learning who I am through the spiritual path I’m following. I do love the saying that we are spiritual beings having a human experience. The music does reflect this with songs like Living Forever, Join In, I call to you, Find The Time.
What was the first record or song you purchased and why?
I’m trying to remember what I bought first, it possibly was a Beatles album because they really stood out.
What would say to someone thinking about becoming a musician and getting into the music industry?
I haven’t got too much in depth experience with the music industry comparted to other artists. But I would say just enjoy what you’re doing and if you get a negative then don’t let it get you down!
If you could collaborate with any other band/singer or musician who would you choose and why?
That’s a hard question, there’s lots of artists! But one of them would be Heather Nova, she is such an amazing singer/songwriter especially love her Siren and Oyster albums.
If you could have written one song from history which would it have been and why?
That’s another hard question! There is so many songs I love. Because I mentioned Heather Nova a beautiful song called Doubled Up.
What things make you uncomfortable?
An uncomfortable chair!
If you wrote a book about yourself what would it have in it?
It would definitely show how I got interested in the spiritual path that I am following and what’s happened so far with the music.
What has the rest of the year got in store for you and can you tell us about any gig date changes or where we can find the info?
Every gig and festival since March was cancelled unfortunately due to covid.
But 2021 is looking fab! If all goes ahead I will be playing the Gorse Festival, Merseyside. Jam In The Park Festival, Merseyside. Keynsham Festival between 3rd and 4th July, and the Crossing The Tyne Festival between 27th and 31st August.
