Rags and Riches Interview
When did you decide that a career in music was for you?
We come from a music family background. Our moms side of the family were always traveling and performing all over the country. Peyton and I(Tanner) started playing music at a young age. Whether it be us strumming guitars and singing over the Walk the Line Movie Soundtrack or playing at church, we always had music within us!
Who are your musical inspirations and why?
I would say it is a huge variety of inspirations. Anywhere from Jimi Hendrix, U2, Queen to modern inspirations being Imagine Dragons, Twenty One Pilots, Thirty Seconds to Mars. All of these people/bands have inspired me both personally and lyrically. I would dare to say that without all of them, I wouldn't be where I am today.
Can you tell me 3 things about yourself that people might not already know?
First, being from Lexington, Kentucky I am a HUGE Kentucky Wildcats Basketball fan. I keep up with them while on the road touring the best I possibly can.
Secondly, I love to travel and experience different cultures. So, being on the road touring has been such a thrill and dream come true.
Lasty, I would love to meet Leonardo DiCaprio in person. I am a huge fan of his work and have always had it on my bucket list to meet him.
What song of yours best describes you and why?
I would say our song 'X' best describes me. I feel as if I am always searching for something I want or have to achieve. I live everyday on an adventure after my own treasure/goal.
What has been the best gig you have done to date and why?
It has been hard to beat our first show. We had a completely packed venue with people who were dying to see who/what we are about. The whole show was absolutely crazy and such a rush.
If you could perform a gig at any venue where would it be and why?
Madison Square Garden hands down! That is one of the top 3 venues in the world that you know that you have "made it" or achieved greatness!
What has been your best achievement to date and what would you like to achieve in the future?
That is a hard one, it would definitely be a close one between our first major U.S. tour of 68 days and our first single 'Speed of Sound' hitting over 700,000 streams! In the near future our main goal is to open for some major artists and hit a million streams on upcoming single.
Tell me a story from backstage or after a gig?
The biggest story that sticks out to me was definitely from our most recent tour. A woman came up to me and said that our newest release 'Edge of Time' really spoke to her. She began to cry and talk about how she "didn't know what to live for anymore and our lyrics 'You gotta live to be alive, to be alive you gotta live your life' spoke volumes to her and encouraged her to live and do more with her life." That made everything we have done up to this point more than worth it.
What do you like best about being a musician and why?
The people/fans, just getting to be around people and encourage others to live better lives always has and always will be number one for me. I am a huge people person, so the biggest thrill and rush overall is being with people who love music.
If you were not in the job you are now what would you be doing?
If I wasn't doing music, I would definitely have played professional baseball. My dads side of the family had numerous people play in the MLB and I have always loved the game.
What has been the best gig you have been too as a fan and can you tell us about it?
Twenty One Pilots at Bridgestone Arena on their Bandito Tour. Seeing how the crowd are all in with them no matter what they ask of them, is stunning and inspiring. On top of their always incredible light shows they are a hard to beat performance!
What would your ideal festival line up be and why?
I would say the ideal festival line up for me would be: Twenty One Pilots, Post Malone, Billie Eilish, Panic! At The Disco, Imagine Dragons, Thirty Seconds to Mars, Muse, Halsey, Justin Bieber, Harry Styles, Jon Bellion, Lana Del Rey. Just to mention a few of the line up. lol
What would you say is the best piece of advice you have ever been given?
My grandfather always says, "If you love what you're doing, you'll never work a day in your life." I think that has always pushed me to do what I love and never settle for something I don't fully enjoy.
What things make you happy and what things annoy you?
Happy- Spending time with family, fiance, and loved ones, making music, movies, traveling, playing NBA 2K, my dogs.
Annoyed- I'm slightly OCD, so I like things overly clean, bad drivers, being patient.
What things do you like to do when you are away from music?
I spend a lot of time with family and my fiance. I also watch a ton of movies and play a lot of NBA 2k.
Do you think social media and the internet are a good thing in the music industry?
I do, but it all depends on content you're posting. Once you find that niche of what your fans and followers want to see from you, that's when everything falls into place. I think a lot of artists don't realize that the social media side of things can open doors for you that your music can not!
How important do you think you look and image is when it comes to being in the music industry?
I think your look and image is THE MOST IMPORTANT THING! Everyone is wanting to stay relevant and ahead of trends. Fashion has taken over the music industry. IT MATTERS WHAT YOU WEAR!
If you run the country for a day what would you change about it and why?
I would make it mandatory to attend a show once a week. Haha
We got caught up in our everyday lives, that we forget to get out and have fun and take a breather. It would help people be soo much more relaxed the rest of the week.
What would your ideal day consist of?
My ideal day is waking up in a different city or country every morning and going out to sight see and take in wherever I am. Trying as many foods and experiences as I can. Then, at night performing for thousands of energetic fans.
Can you tell me one thing about each member that people might not already know?
Peyton - Is a genius... He does our producing, graphics, socials, etc. He is the brains of everything!
Jonah - Is a huge gamer. Always on his phone playing something while we are touring/working on music.
Can you tell us about ‘’Edge of Time’’ the meaning behind it and how it feels to make our Always Changing Chart with the song?
The song is basically encouraging people in a dog eat dog world to live large and never settle for mediocrity. It is a huge honor and privilege for 'Edge of Time' to be a part of the Always Changing Chart! Thank you for including it!
If you could say one thing to your fans what would it be and why?
We are more than thankful for all of you and your constant support of RAGS AND RICHES. What we have been able to achieve together so far is only the beginning!
How would you answer the question Who are Rags and Riches and what are the differences between you as a music artist and you away from music ?
RAGS AND RICHES is a movement of people from all walks of life coming together as ONE to change the world with just a moment of positivity.
The difference between the music artist side of us and us away from music is not a lot at all... We pride ourselves on being as transparent and open in everything we do.
What was the first record or song you purchased and why?
The first record I purchased was Enema of the State from blink-182. I loved 'All The Small Things', so I purchased the album. From that day forward, I have been a massive fan of them. Especially their early material!
What would say to someone thinking about becoming a musician and getting into the music industry?
There is such a big difference between playing music for fun and becoming a part of the music industry. It takes everything in you and every part of you to stay focused and positive through the ups and downs, the big breaks and doors slammed shut. It is more than able to be done, but really prepare yourself mentally and emotionally for whatever is thrown your way.
If you could collaborate with any other band/singer or musician who would you choose and why?
I think at this point it is a hard tie between Post Malone and Billie Eilish. The directions of their music is the in-between of what we are doing. Either of them would be a perfect fit for a collab.
If you could have written one song from history which would it have been and why?
Faithfully- Journey. I have always related to that song deeply. It is just one of those songs that I wish I would've written.
What things make you uncomfortable?
The most uncomfortable feeling is uncertainty. When I don't know what is next or what I can do to better my situation in a moment, I always feel soo uncomfortable!
If you wrote a book about yourself what would it have in it?
It would have a ton of my childhood, my years of working in the church, family and my fiance, along with the beginning phases of the band and touring! That would be more than enough material for a book or a trilogy. LOL
What has the rest of the year got in store for you?
We have quite a bit of material planned for the rest of 2020. We will also will be touring summer and some of the fall of 2020. Be on the look out for a new single very soon!
