Ryan Edmond Interview
When did you decide that a career in music was for you?
I just remember growing up and going to Grandad’s (who was a painter and musician) everyday to practice cornet and he would always say “Keep doing this and you’ll never have to get your hands dirty”. Although I stopped playing cornet/trumpet I always thought I would come back to music in one way or another. Once he passed away I thought a lot about where I was and what I wanted to do. So I really began focusing on music, singing and songwriting.
Who are your musical inspirations and why?
Chet Baker - I love his voice and his tone on the trumpet!
Bob Marley - He has always been one of my favourite artists. The way he combined Roots, Rock, Reggae and soul is just something else!!
Aretha Franklin - “The Queen of Soul” She must have one of the most powerful voices of all time!! After her recent passing, I listened to a podcast about her life and it blew me away! She was also the first woman to get into the rock and roll hall of fame, which I think is super cool!
Can you tell me 3 things about yourself that people might not already know?
I'm a carpenter, I live in Sweden half the year and Australia half the year and I am co-owner of the sustainable clothing brand True Threads.
What song of yours best describes you and why?
I would say “Across the Ocean”, it is literally about moving across the ocean to Stockholm in Sweden, and I will be releasing this one in the coming months!
What has been the best gig you have done to date and why?
I would have to say, one of my first’s gigs with a full band! It was at Clancys Fish Pub in Fremantle. Was just so fun to play with my brother Mathew Edmond on drums, and good mates Phill Legget on guitar, Wayana Dana on bass and Goergie Joe on djembe! Most of my family and friends were down there also. Was just heaps of fun! (although we had only rehearsed a couple of times haha!)
If you could perform a gig at any venue where would it be and why?
Anywhere and everywhere!!
What has been your best achievement to date and what would like to achieve in the future?
Releasing my debut single! I have worked on many songs with different producers and came close to releasing them, although I’m happy now that I waited because “From the Start” really feels like it was the right song for my debut release!
Tell me a story from backstage or after a gig?
This is a hard one, so I am thinking back to my most recent gig which was in Cornwall, England. After Land of Trees and myself had finished a group of us went to a little Indian restaurant and ordered Indian food. It was amazing.
What do you like best about being a musician and why?
Being able to connect with people through music, songwriting and the feeling of being out of your comfort zone!
If you were not in the job you are now what would you be doing?
Carpentry for sure!! I am still working as a carpenter part-time, I had around a year off at one point and I actually missed being outdoors and working with mates.
What has been the best gig you have been too as a fan and can you tell us about it?
This is a real hard one! I would have to say Damien Rice, although it was more the experience that made it so good. I have always wanted to see him live ever since I heard the O album. I never had the chance to see him in Australia, then living in Sweden and traveling around I kept missing his shows by a day or two. When my girlfriend and I were in Lisbon, Portugal, we were having dinner and thought we should see if there were any gigs on. When we read that Damien Rice was playing we hopped on a tram and went straight there. He only had 20 minutes left so the lady on the door let us in for free and we ran up to our spot on the balcony and caught the last 5 songs. It was incredible! I really wish we planned it better and got to see the whole show though!
What would your ideal festival line up be and why?
Paolo Nutini, Fat Freddy's Drop, Lana Del Rey and Gregory Alan Isacov .These are all artists I haven't had the chance to see live yet and would love to! Ow and my girlfriend's old band Elephant Attack!
What would you say is the best piece of advice you have ever been given?
The balls in your court.
What things make you happy and what things annoy you?
What things do you like to do when you are away from music?
Surf, snowboard, hang with my girlfriend and mates and having a few beers!!!
Do you think social media and the internet are a good thing in the music industry?
Yes, it's a great way to connect with people, release music and share stories.
How important do you think you look and image is when it comes to being in the music industry?
I think it is huge! Not that you have to look perfect but I feel like you need to be yourself and have an image.
Can you tell us about any tattoos have and the significance of them to you?
I have quite a few tattoos but I would say my favourite is a bald eagle on my forearm, its is the same as my Grandads had so it means a lot to me. My worst tattoo is an LA tattoo which I woke up with, in a hostel in Los Angeles… My mate also has the same… hectic….
If you run the country for a day what would you change about it and why?
Well that’s a tough question haha so I’m gonna start with the small things that can make a big change. Like banning single use plastics and guns to the public!!
What would your ideal day consist of?
I would start off by going for a surf with mates, an epic smoothie bowl with a coffee, some songwriting, chill and then go watch a gig… or play a gig!
Can you tell us about any new releases gigs or anything else coming up in the future?
I am currently working on finishing my debut EP, the next single will drop in 8 week!! I am also playing at some festivals in Sweden that I am super excited for!
If you could say one thing to your fans what would it be and why?
Please click follow on spotify haha! Just kidding, it would be thanks so much for listening to my music! means the world to me!
How would you answer the questions who are Ryan Edmond?
Ryan Edmond is a laid back person who writes songs that he hopes people will listen to.
What was the first record or song you purchased and why?
Haha it was Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water by Limp Bizkit. My brothers and I got it when we were super young. The next day Mum took it straight back to the store haha!
What would say to someone thinking about becoming a musician and getting into the music industry?
Practice heaps! don’t compare yourself to others because there's only one you! and throw yourself in the deep end! (to some extent)
If you could collaborate with any other band/singer or musician who would you choose and why?
I would love to collaborate with Max Martin because who wouldn’t!!!
If you could have written one song from history which would it have been and why?
First thing that comes to mind is “My Funny Valentine” by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart although the version I love is by Chet Baker.
What things make you uncomfortable?
Packed public transport!
If you wrote a book about yourself what would it have in it? It would be fiction and I would be some sort of super hero that saves the planet.
What has the rest of the year go in store for you?
I am playing at a Lilla Torg Festival, Halifornia Festival, Hudikkalaset Festival, Porter Pelle's and a few other shows around Sweden. Ill be heading back to Australia around October for some more shows! I am very excited to see what the future will hold. Thanks for the chat!
