ALT BLK ERA

When did you decide that a career in music was for you?

Nyrobi: I've always dreamed of being a ‘singer’ . The hardest part was convincing the No.1 introvert ( a.k.a.,my sister Chaya) that we should do it together.

It's a conversation we had when we were about 10 & 7 years old.

Who are your musical inspirations and why?

One of our biggest inspirations is Beyonce, not only is she an incredible performer but a business woman who has such a deep understanding and command of every element of her business.

Also, artists like The Prodigy & Ateez who have incredible stage presence.

We love Stromae too who is such a well rounded artist with beautiful in-depth storytelling. He has a striking image and similar to us, he takes inspiration from instruments and sounds across cultures.

What song of yours best describes you and why?

Nyrobi : Our song ‘Obsession : SOLAR’ best describes me, Id say the mix of playful energy, hard rap & a guitar line that I could only describe as ‘swaggy’, it's that song that gets me hyped!

Chaya :

What has been the best gig you have done to date and why?

Hands down, it was seeing The Prodigy live.

A few years ago our mum showed us a video of them performing when we were struggling to find someone to look up to in the industry.

Seeing them definitely unlocked something in us. The confidence, passion, brilliant music & chemistry that they have is everything we’re building towards.

If you could perform a gig at any venue where would it be and why?

We’d love to perform at the o2 in London!!!

That would be a 'what the f**k' moment!

What has been your best achievement to date and what would you like to achieve in the future?

Nyrobi : It's so, so hard to single out one moment…. I’d say being nominated for a MOBO Award was absolutely HUGEEEE!

Chaya: It felt amazing to play Glastonbury in 2024 and in the future we’d like to play on the main stage and collab with some of our favourite artists!

We, of course, have the Download mainstage in our sights too!

What do you like best about being a musician and why?

The music industry isn't an easy one to be in but we love so much about it.

From creating new sounds, writing songs that connect with our audience, live performances and connecting with our listeners.

The extra blessing is meeting so many beautiful people in real life - our fans and other music creators.

If you were not in the job you are now what would you be doing?

Chaya : I would probably be in college now - but there are so many jobs that I've imagined myself doing.

I've wanted to be a real-estate agent for the longest time though  - I have no idea where that desire has comed from but it's the one job that's stuck.

Nyrobi : I would probably be at a performing arts school. Music and acting were the only routes that I would have taken.

What has been the best gig you have been to as a fan and can you tell us about it?

Both : PRODIGY!! We travelled to Leeds to see them and it was incredible.

We obviously missed the awesomeness of Keith Flint but it was incredible to feel so much love for him in the arena.

What would your ideal festival line up be and why?

Nyrobi : Prodigy, Lous and the Yakuza and Skepta

Chaya : Nine Inch Nails, Sleep Token, Story of the Year

What would you say is the best piece of advice you have ever been given?

TO TRUST YOUR GUT!!!

People are really enthusiastic and are generous with their time when they share their experiences or thoughts on the direction we should take

We love hearing about the possibilities so we always listen carefully and respectfully - but then ultimately we only follow and adapt advice if it feels right for us

When you are sure of yourself as an artist then you have to keep to the path that you want to take.

What things make you happy and what things annoy you?

Nyrobi : What makes me happy is when people are really supportive of the band and genuinely want us to do well.

Chaya : I sometimes get annoyed when my sister wakes me up at like 2am to sing random choruses at me, but I usually fall back asleep as she's singing lol

What things do you like to do when you are away from music?

Nyrobi : Sleep

Chaya : I like to watch J-dramas and K-dramas

Do you think social media and the internet are a good thing in the music industry?

Nyrobi: Everything has its pros & cons but in our experience it's been perfect!

We wouldn't have been able to share our music with so many people without it!

How important do you think your look and image is when it comes to being in the music industry?

Nyrobi: We love fashion and makeup - so we are always experimenting.

Fashion has become a big thing for us but it's not something that we've forced - it's something that we focus on anyway.

The weirder the better!

Chaya:I think image is important for artists - it helps your people to identify you quickly. if they spot you - they'll stop scrolling!

Can you tell us about any tattoos you have and the significance of them to you?

We don’t have any tattoos…yet - but Chaya wants to get some when she’s older.

Our mom might not be too impressed though.

If you run the country for a day what would you change about it and why?

Nyrobi: I take this question too seriously to give a silly answer lol so I would get a team of advisors & make sure i really made a difference!

What would your ideal day consist of?

Nyrobi: An ideal day would be interacting with our fans on social media in the morning and then getting on stage to rage at night

Chaya: Just chill

Nyrobi: Yep! That sounds about right. Chaya would stay home all day if she could - but don't worry - I won't allow it, she's too talented.

If you could say one thing to your fans what would it be and why?

We'd both just want to thank them for their words of encouragement, for believing in us and for defending us from the trolls who pop up online to spread their negativity.

We feel really protected and safe with them.

How would you answer the question Who are Alt Blk Era and what are the differences between you as a music artist and you away from music ?

We are sisters who stumbled into the world of Rock and alternative music and what you see is exactly who we are. It would be too exhausting to try and be something other than that.

The only difference you might see is that we are serious about the business side of music too. So we want to understand all the elements that happen in the background.

There's still so much to learn!

What was the first record or song you purchased and why?

Nyrobi : Ashnikko - Weedkiller. I love her flow and her energy. The clarity in her music is also something I admire

Chaya : Nyrobi buys everything for me and it was Alana Del Rey's album - NFR, for my 15th Birthday.

I was also gifted Nine Inch Nails by Earache Records for my birthday too.

What would say to someone thinking about becoming a musician and getting into the music industry?

Listen

Be respectful of others

Stay away from big egos - you'll get crushed!

Fall in love with posting on social media

Don't worry too much about your fails - just learn from them

If you could collaborate with any other band/singer or musician who would you choose and why?

Nyrobi : ATEEZ!!!!

Chaya : Sleep Token

If you could have written one song from history which would it have been and why?

The songs we really love are ones that we couldn't even imagine writing.

They are so perfect the way they are.

What things make you uncomfortable?

Nyrobi : People touching my beautiful black afro

Chaya : Social Interactions

If you wrote a book about yourself what would it have in it?

A WHOLE LOT OF CHAPTERS!!!!

Even though we’re young we've had so many experiences that we'd like to share!

Some of them we'll be sharing in our upcoming music.

(Chaya said she wouldn't read my biography because she already knows what happened in my life lmao)

What has the rest of the year got in store for you?

We can't share everything at this point but what we can tell you is...

  • We’ll be releasing our DEBUT ALBUM!!!!!!

  • We’re Headlining a festival for the first time

  •  AND we're playing Download Festival.

We’re very excited about what this year has in store for us & our fans.
