F.T Lukens Interview
What was it like for you growing up, what inspired you and when did you first find
out that you were interested in writing stories?
I was an early reader. In part because I was the fourth of four children and there was
always someone who would either read to me when I asked or help me sound out
words. I was extremely introverted and was often handed a book and told to go read
when something chaotic was happening in the household (which was often). I also
daydreamed a lot and made up my own stories. In the third grade, the class was given a
writing assignment to create a short story and that sparked my interest in writing stories
down. My computer teacher enjoyed my story about a knight and a princess so much,
she printed it out and hung it in the computer room. And that was the beginning.
Can you tell me one thing about yourself that people might not already know?
I had a white Shetland pony named Dusty while I was growing up. My family acquired
her before I was born as a retired party pony, and she died when I was in my twenties.
What preparation do you do before you start writing a book and what do you
think the key things are when writing a good book?
Before I start writing something new, I’ll do whatever research I feel is necessary. Be
that research on myths or mythical creatures or magic or even something mundane like
parts of a castle. I’ll also read or re-read craft books as a refresher. Since Love at
Second Sight is my first mystery novel, I read about how to construct a compelling
mystery. I’ll also brainstorm and plot before even starting a document for the book. I
think great character development is just one of many keys in making a story stick with
a reader.
What are your favourite books? Who for you has been the best story book
character ever made and which authors inspire you?
My favourite books are The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams and
Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston. The best character ever written,
in my opinion, is actually not from a book, but from an animated series—and that is
Prince Zuko from Avatar: The Last Airbender. Right now the authors who inspire me are
those who are writing currently like Kamilah Cole, Julian Winters, Beth Revis, and CB
Lee.
What music and television are you into and do you use them for inspiration?
I’m currently into so many tv shows it’s difficult to keep up with them all. I love Ghosts
(US), Severance, Matlock (with Kathy Bates), The Floor (gameshow), the new Duck
Tales, Star Trek Lower Decks, and am looking forward to the second season of
Wednesday. I don’t watch tv and movies looking specifically for inspiration. That said, I
do think ideas can come from anywhere.
What hobbies do you have and what other things do you like to do in your spare
time?
I’m an avid crocheter and I post my creations on my Instagram. And I’ve started a
vegetable garden.
Can you tell us about Love At Second Sight and what are the main reasons why
people should read it?
Love at Second Sight is a paranormal romance murder mystery. It follows the main
character, Cam, who has a psychic vision of a murder on the first day of his sophomore
year of high school. He gathers a group of friends that include a witch, a werewolf, a
medium, and a sprite to help him solve the mystery. If you are someone who loves teen
paranormal tv shows and movies then this is the book for you.
What is the best character or plot you have ever thought of? Are there any ideas
you have rejected which you wish you’d have used?
Honestly, I think the best plot I’ve ever written is the one in Love at Second Sight just
because of how many characters and moving parts that are in it and that I had to keep
close track of. I have some ideas that I haven’t had the chance to explore yet, but
nothing that I think I’ve rejected and have regret over.
If one of your books was made into a film or TV program, how would you
approach it?
I am unsure. I think I would either want to be in the writer’s room and hands on or I
would want to be completely left out of it. But I won’t really know my preference unless it
happens!
Can you tell us about any ideas you have for future work?
Well, I have a few ideas. One is a YA fantasy that features a lot of chaos, and the other
is a contemporary fantasy romance.
What are your main reasons for writing books?
I’ve always loved books and reading. And I’ve made up my own stories since I was very
young. Writing books has become a natural creative outlet. And I love creating
characters and stories that I would’ve loved as a teen reader and ones that I needed but
didn’t encounter.
What would you like to say to the people who have either bought your books or
are thinking about it?
To those who have purchased my books—I would just say thank you. Thank you so
much for supporting my stories and I hope you found something to take away from
reading them even if it was just that you had a good time. To those who haven’t read
one of my works yet—if you’re looking for a book to ease into the fantasy genre, then
you might enjoy my books.
If you had to describe yourself and your writing style to someone reading this
who didn’t already know you, what would you say?
I would say I am an author of YA fantasy and contemporary fantasies that feature a
queer romance and often comedy. I would say my writing style is accessible for readers
new to fantasy.
What are you up to at the moment and what’s next for you?
I’m currently in editorial process for my 2026 book – Last Best Quest Ever. And I’m
plotting/writing two new works.
